Of particular concern are those strains that are resistant to two or more of the first-line anti-tuberculosis drugs, including multidrug resistant (MDR) – resistant to rifampicin and isoniazid – and extensively drug resistant-tuberculosis (XDR) strains that are resistant to rifampicin, isoniazid, a second line injectable drug (capreomycin, kanamycin or amikacin) and a fluoroquinolone. tuberculosis infections can be effectively resolved with a standard 6–9 month course of antibiotics with at least three drugs, the emergence of drug resistant strains severely complicates treatment.
